Valerie Vargas
Occupational Therapist
MS, OTR/L, CPAM
Valerie is a licensed occupational therapist with 15 years of clinical experience. She has worked at multiple hospitals in the Bay Area throughout her career. Her professional focus on the advanced practice area of hand and upper extremity rehabilitation was shaped not only by extensive education, but by personal experience. After sustaining a hand injury during a flag football game in 2019, which required surgery, she gained a deep appreciation for the complexities of the hand and the impact injury can have on daily life. This experience sparked a strong interest and ultimately led her to this specialized area of practice.
As both a therapist and a former client, Valerie brings a unique perspective to care: one that values the therapeutic relationship, individualized treatment, privacy, and thoughtfully curated function-focused interventions, with undivided attention. She is passionate about helping clients understand anatomy, restore function, and return to the activities that matter most.

I thought the pain after my carpal tunnel surgery would never go away so my doctor sent me to occupational therapy. Valerie was patient and reassuring. She helped me regain my confidence, and I can finally say I don't have the constant ache I used to.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is hand therapy?
Hand therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation focused on the hand, wrist, and upper extremity, provided by an occupational or physical therapist with advanced training in this area. It uses techniques like customized exercise, manual therapy, splinting, and education to reduce pain and swelling, improve movement and strength, and help you get back to everyday activities more comfortably.
How do I know if hand therapy is right for me?
Hand therapy may be right for you if pain, stiffness, weakness, or numbness in your hand, wrist, or elbow is starting to interfere with everyday tasks like gripping, lifting, typing, or self-care. It is also a good fit if you are recovering from an injury or surgery to the hand or upper extremity and want guided rehabilitation to safely restore movement, strength, and function. If you find yourself avoiding activities you used to do comfortably because of your hand or wrist, that is a strong sign it is worth scheduling an evaluation with a hand therapist.
Do I need a physician referral?
No, you can be evaluated and begin treatment immediately with direct access, for up to 12 visits. After that, you may need a physician signature to continue, and in some cases a signature is required for superbills and reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider
Do you accept insurance?

What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt of each visit that you can submit to insurance for reimbursement if eligible. Check for out-of-network coverage options with your plan provider.
Will hand therapy be painful?
It shouldn't be painful, but mild soreness and discomfort can occur while regaining motion and strength. Fractures, scars, and more serious ailments can already be painful, in this case a therapist will begin with pain relieving strategies and progress to your tolerance.
Will you come to my home or office?
